ENERGY

In 2009, I voted in favor of HB 2367 which approved the permit for Sunflower Electric Power Corporation’s new facility at Holcomb, a state of the art, clean coal fired power plant capable of producing bio-diesel from captured CO2, mitigating environmental effects. It is projected to inject $3.5 billion into the economy. The Holcomb power plant will create high paying jobs, secure our energy needs for the future, provide the infrastructure needed for wind energy expansion, and generate additional revenue for the state.

During my campaign in 2008, the month of August was extremely hot, as it tends to be in Kansas. When I was doing my door to door, meeting the voters in my district in this 90 degree + weather, I heard those air conditioner condenser units running, and I would think how cool it must be inside those homes. From house to house you could hear those air conditioners. I love my air conditioner too. Folks we simply must make sure that we have adequate energy to meet our future needs. If we don't act now we will be looking at possible brown-outs, blackouts, and even higher energy costs. Just take a look at California and the problems they have encountered because they did not plan ahead. If we had developed our oil resources, and not been so dependent on foreign oil, we wouldn't be looking at the high price of gasoline now. Let's not make that same mistake with our energy needs here in the state of Kansas.
